Every relationship goes through phases and changes, some of which are unpredictable. For example, having a baby, a partner's job loss or job change, a move, or health problems all create change in a couple's relationship. During such times, it is difficult to navigate uncharted waters without a compass or a guide. Partners often need to learn how to more effectively communicate with each other and how to express strong negative emotions in ways that are not perceived as attacking the other. If the issue has been going on for a while, partners might need to learn to re-connect with each other and re-kindle the passion they once felt at the beginning of the relationship when things felt easier and more natural.
As a Certified Imago Therapist, Lisa E. Haberman, J.D., M.S.W., L.C.S.W. uses Imago Couples Therapy by coaching partners to actively listen to each other from the heart, validate (not necessarily agree with) the partner's understanding of the issue, and empathize with the partner's feelings. She helps couples identify obstacles to having the relationship they desire and creates a safe environment in which to overcome these obstacles. She also uses Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help each partner reprocess the negative emotional experience that underlies any negative interactional pattern that keeps them in a stuck place. Through exercises in session as well as outside the session, partners get back in touch with what initially attracted them to the other, and they learn to help each other heal. In this way, they strengthen their relationship. Ms. Haberman ultimately guides couples to re-romanticize the relationship, put the "fun" back into their life as a couple, and create a conscious, loving, and mutually respectful partnership.
